I’ve gotten nothing back from her. Hence the obsessive phone checking.

The last thing I want to do is go on a date with Destiny, or any other woman, for that matter, unless it’s the one currently driving me crazy, but it appears as though I’ll be forced to call her bluff and go on the date anyway.

Maybe this is the wrong play to call, but I’m going with my gut.

I’m more than ready to put an end to this matchmaking foolishness and skip to the good part. The part where Mel and I give this thing between us a chance. But I’ve made a million wrong calls in the past where she’s concerned, and I’m scared to push too soon. I have to treat her like I did her cat that night in the alley. I’ve got to be patient and wait for her to come to me.

Scrubbing a hand down my face, I open a drawer, ready to shove my silent phone and thoughts about my angry pixie out of sight, when the device lights up.

It’s not Mel calling, but I grin at the screen anyway.

I slide my thumb across the screen to accept the call, put it on speaker, and set the phone on my desk. “Well, if it isn’t Racy Lacey.”

His responding chuckle is gravelly. “Dell. How’s it going, man?”

It’s good to hear from him, but his tone lacks its usual ebullience, putting me on edge instantly. “Good, brother. How about you?”

A heavy sigh crackles through the speaker. “Same old.”

Now I’m worried. My former teammate never sounds less than enthused, even on a bad day.

But I keep my voice light and continue, hoping he’ll come out with it quickly. “Tell me what’s new, then.”

Another sigh. “Team let me go. Found out yesterday.”

My stomach drops, and I can’t stop the sharp intake of air. Griffin Lacey is one of the most talented and successful tight ends in the league. He was instrumental in helping the Tennessee Tornadoes earn two national championships. He’s a fan favorite and an NFL superstar. Yes, he’s nearing the end of his career at the ripe “old” age of thirty-four. And yes, he finished this past season with a shoulder injury that required surgery, but he’s by no means ready to be put to pasture. He’s been with the Tors his entire career and was hopeful that he’d retire with them, too.

“Crap, Griff, I’m so sorry. What does Kevin say?”

Kevin Donahue is Griffin’s agent. He’s brutally honest, but cutthroat for his players. I’d know. He represented me once upon a time, too.

He grunts. “Kevin might be dead to me. He suggested that maybe it’s time for me to hang up my cleats, look into broadcast bullshit.”

I almost bark a laugh at the thought of Griffin Lacey’s potty mouth on network TV. He’d owe thousands to Ma’s swear jar.

“But you still want to play?” I already know the answer, but I ask anyway.

“Fuck yeah, I want to play.”

“How’s the rehab going?”

“On schedule.”

I can’t help but frown.
