Iâve gotten nothing back from her. Hence the obsessive phone checking.
The last thing I want to do is go on a date with Destiny, or any other woman, for that matter, unless itâs the one currently driving me crazy, but it appears as though Iâll be forced to call her bluff and go on the date anyway.
Maybe this is the wrong play to call, but Iâm going with my gut.
Iâm more than ready to put an end to this matchmaking foolishness and skip to the good part. The part where Mel and I give this thing between us a chance. But Iâve made a million wrong calls in the past where sheâs concerned, and Iâm scared to push too soon. I have to treat her like I did her cat that night in the alley. Iâve got to be patient and wait for her to come to me.
Scrubbing a hand down my face, I open a drawer, ready to shove my silent phone and thoughts about my angry pixie out of sight, when the device lights up.
Itâs not Mel calling, but I grin at the screen anyway.
I slide my thumb across the screen to accept the call, put it on speaker, and set the phone on my desk. âWell, if it isnât Racy Lacey.â
His responding chuckle is gravelly. âDell. Howâs it going, man?â
Itâs good to hear from him, but his tone lacks its usual ebullience, putting me on edge instantly. âGood, brother. How about you?â
A heavy sigh crackles through the speaker. âSame old.â
Now Iâm worried. My former teammate never sounds less than enthused, even on a bad day.
But I keep my voice light and continue, hoping heâll come out with it quickly. âTell me whatâs new, then.â
Another sigh. âTeam let me go. Found out yesterday.â
My stomach drops, and I canât stop the sharp intake of air. Griffin Lacey is one of the most talented and successful tight ends in the league. He was instrumental in helping the Tennessee Tornadoes earn two national championships. Heâs a fan favorite and an NFL superstar. Yes, heâs nearing the end of his career at the ripe âoldâ age of thirty-four. And yes, he finished this past season with a shoulder injury that required surgery, but heâs by no means ready to be put to pasture. Heâs been with the Tors his entire career and was hopeful that heâd retire with them, too.
âCrap, Griff, Iâm so sorry. What does Kevin say?â
Kevin Donahue is Griffinâs agent. Heâs brutally honest, but cutthroat for his players. Iâd know. He represented me once upon a time, too.
He grunts. âKevin might be dead to me. He suggested that maybe itâs time for me to hang up my cleats, look into broadcast bullshit.â
I almost bark a laugh at the thought of Griffin Laceyâs potty mouth on network TV. Heâd owe thousands to Maâs swear jar.
âBut you still want to play?â I already know the answer, but I ask anyway.
âFuck yeah, I want to play.â
âHowâs the rehab going?â
âOn schedule.â
I canât help but frown.
